Social Media and Its Impact on Life

Social media has become a dominant force in today’s world, transforming the way we communicate and interact. But before we delve into its impact, it’s important to understand what social media truly is. Although most people use it regularly, the real meaning might not be fully clear to everyone.

According to recent statistics, more than half of the world’s population uses social media. This widespread adoption highlights the significance of understanding its true nature.

Social media refers to websites and applications that allow individuals to create, share, and consume content in real time. This ability to connect instantly is a key reason why social media remains such a powerful medium.

Despite not always intending to, many of us have become highly dependent on social media. We dedicate a considerable amount of time to it, and it has become an integral part of our daily lives. Here’s how:

  1. Access to Global News: We get news from around the world through social media platforms.
  2. Staying Connected: We can stay in touch with family and friends, no matter the distance.
  3. Sharing Ideas: It provides a platform to share our ideologies and opinions with the world.
  4. Business Growth: Social media is a vital tool for marketing and growing businesses.
  5. Employment Opportunities: Many people have found job opportunities through social media.

However, we must also consider what we might be losing due to our reliance on these platforms:

  1. Time with Family: The time we should be spending with our loved ones often goes to social media.
  2. Influence on Personal Decisions: We may be making life decisions based on the opinions or trends we encounter online.
  3. Children's Playtime: Kids, who should be spending time playing outdoors, are often glued to screens.
  4. Disrupted Daily Routine: The constant availability of social media on our phones has disrupted our natural routines—from when we wake up to when we sleep.
  5. Reduced Personal Interactions: Social media has replaced face-to-face interactions, even for simple gestures like wishing someone a happy birthday or anniversary. As a result, direct communication has diminished, even within our own households.

We must understand that social media needs to be used responsibly, something that is often neglected. It can be a tool for productivity, but it can also lead to destructive behaviors. Many people exploit social media for personal gain, misleading others in the process.

Though some might disagree, a closer look reveals that we are increasingly seeing the world through the lens of social media. This is pulling us further away from the reality of our physical surroundings, as we get immersed in the virtual world.

It’s crucial to maintain balance. Everything should be used in moderation; otherwise, its negative side effects will eventually affect our lives. We must protect ourselves and our children from this social media-driven chaos. If we don’t, we risk losing touch with the natural world and steering our lives in the wrong direction.

The Dangers of Showing Off in Life

Nowadays, people have become overly fond of showing off, and this trend is especially common among the middle class. In the pursuit of maintaining a certain image, many are compromising their happiness and financial stability. Some prime examples of this behavior include:

  • Buying and wearing expensive branded clothes, shoes, and accessories.

  • Owning the latest high-end mobile phones.

  • Purchasing luxury watches.

  • Driving expensive cars beyond their means.

To sustain this false lifestyle, people are increasingly spending beyond their income, sometimes even taking loans from banks. I still fail to understand why people feel the need to do this.

We should live within our means and avoid the trap of pretentiousness. While some may not agree, the truth remains that many lives are being ruined due to this obsession with appearances.

Additionally, we must be cautious of those who befriend us solely based on our status. Such friendships are often superficial—when your financial situation changes, so does their loyalty. As our elders have wisely said, false status does not last long.

I firmly believe that true friendships should be based on a person’s character, not their wealth or status. Although finding such genuine people is rare, if you do, cherish them—because true friends and supportive relatives are blessings that only the fortunate receive.

Reflections on Life and Unfulfilled Dreams

If you remember, back in 10th grade, 12th grade, and even during our college years, we spent a lot of time thinking about life. But as time passes, we often don’t realize where all those thoughts and dreams went. When those memories resurface, we may feel like we’ve wasted so much time, and we sometimes lack the courage to pursue those dreams.

As time goes on, maturity comes into play, and while many people might say this is simply a part of growing up, I won't argue with that. But what I feel is that time brings stability to our thoughts and actions, which ultimately improves our decision-making ability. Eventually, we realize what we truly wanted to do in life versus what we are actually doing.

Many of us have likely asked ourselves, "What did I want to do in life, and what am I doing now?"

But here's the real issue: Do we have the courage to live out our unfulfilled dreams today? Most people will offer vague answers, citing various reasons to justify themselves. But the truth is, many of us simply don't have the courage. And perhaps, we’ll continue living with that regret.

I still find myself struggling to understand why we can’t find the time to pursue even our smallest desires, such as learning the guitar, cycling, sketching, and more. We need to seriously think about this.

Even today, I feel restless about those dreams I once hoped to live. And now, perhaps, I will truly make an effort to fulfill those wishes.

In the end, the result doesn’t matter as much as the fact that we tried.
